As the lifestyle editor here at RoleMommy I feel it is incumbent upon me to cover ALL aspects of a mom’s lifestyle which include drum roll… the bedroom and the activity or lack thereof that is taking place in there. I mean mamas lets’ face it- SEX is a big part of a relationship- or at least- was one of the make-or-break its that you crossed off on your list when you decided to marry your beau.
As a veteran in this institution of marriage- (heck I’ve clocked ten years so far) I can honestly say- that my mommy lifestyle has been sorely lacking that three letter word and yes- I’m beginning to feel more like my husband and I are a modern day version of the Odd couple- Felix and Oscar– with me fitting Felix to a tee and him- being a grouchy, slovenly Oscar- minus the cigars- bed full of dirty clothes because yes- thankfully after 10 years we’re still sleeping in the same bed. I was utterly shocked by the enormous number of married couples who I’ve slowly come to find out- sleep in separate rooms!
Yes- our nights often go something like this…ME feeding the kids, bathing the kids, brushing their teeth- watching yet another episode of the Jonas Brothers while simultaneously watching my son create a monster tower with his Lego’s- fielding demands like; “Mommy I want an apples with the skin peeled off… Can I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with the crusts cut off, I don’t want to go to sleep, why do I have to go to sleep, can you sleep with me…” until my husband FINALLY walks through the door- and sits at his computer and continues to do work. When I make it to bed- I’m usually out as soon as my head hits the pillow- and although I feel my husband lying next to me- that’s the extent of our “physical intimate ” relationship..
YES VERY depressing… what happened to those days when we couldn’t keep our hands off each other, well they’re long gone! So what’s a lonely mama to do- to put a little vroom vroom back into her lackluster married sex life? Enter DEVINE TOYS!!! Okay- so let me give you a little background
about me, the short version; I married a doctor 15 years older than me… no
you didn’t read that wrong. At 25 years old, I was thinking more along the
lines of future long-term financial security and it didn’t hurt that I
thought he was devastatingly handsome-it kept my mother quiet, I was clearly
intoxicated by the fact that this guy would be obligated to check every
suspicious mole on body- and give me regular breast examinations.
So we sailed off into the sunset- in our M.D. license-plated 1995 Honda
Accord. Well- to give you a bit of perspective- 10 years later well we’re
still driving that Honda, and then a year ago my nice doctor husband told
me he’d rather drive a stake through his heart than see another patient, (okay
I’m using a bit of poetic license here- because his admission had far less
dramatic flair, but you get the gist). So like any good wife- I told him- our
marriage and relationship was not predicated on his M.D. status and that
ultimately being that I never lived the rock star doctor’s wife lifestyle– you
know – convertible BMW, lunching with the ladies- mani-pedis on a bi-weekly
basis- shopping at Coach– that his “profession” wasn’t all that
important to me.
Still it’s been a bit of an adjustment… especially when acquaintances accost
me with statements like; OH my G-d if my husband ever decided he didn’t want to
be a doctor I would divorce him! Or my mother’s recation and insistence that
she will not be telling any of her friends about this CATASTROPHIC event. (NO
this time I’m not exaggerating!)
So when Beth, the infamous Role mommy herself-
asked me to be the Lifestyle Editor for the site- I though- this could possibly
be the perfect opportunity for me to find and share ideas that us real moms in
the trenches- the ones who are not shopping on Madison Avenue, downing martinis
at lunch- rather sipping the last dregs of our kids’ juice boxes (we hate
wasting a perfectly good fruit punch) and looking for ways to cut costs but
still reveling in life’s little luxuries– (I can really whoop it up in those
$1 bins at Target) could ACTUALLY use!.
To kick off my inaugural first lifestyle post the amazing
folks at Nouvelles Images, which produces the non-toxic pretty
fabulous paper wall Homestickers which come in an array of themes for any age
from whimsical forest creatures to colorful underwater life designs and will
brighten your children’s rooms and illuminate their imaginations without breaking
the bank– are giving one lucky reader these stickers for FREE. These are
But really the best part about these Nouvelles Images’ Children’s Homestickers is that they’re non-toxic,
easily applied and removed, only cost $30, and allow kids’ ever changing
interests (last week my daughter was all about Hannah Montana- and now it’s
strictly Selena Gomez) to be reflected in the design of their rooms as
often as they choose. They’re available on Amazon.com, AllPosters.com and ChangeYourWalls.com.

Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom? Bonnie: Before I became a mom, I was a wedding & special event planner in New York City. I worked at the 92nd Street Y, a major NYC cultural center, where I planned events for notables such as Clint Eastwood, Martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, and so many others! I thought my life was busy then, but it is amazing how much busier life with kids can be! Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life? Bonnie: In 2002, we moved from New York to Westport, Connecticut for my husband’s job. When I became pregnant with my first child, I decided to stop commuting to New York and instead launched my own “stylish stationery” business from my kitchen table! Shortly after, our fashion-forward collection of wedding invitations and holiday cards was featured in Modern Bride Magazine and New York Magazine as a “Best Bet” and the excitement has not stopped since! In the past 6 years, my company has grown to 10 employees, 1000 stores world-wide (including high-end retailers such as Bloomingdales, Bendels, and Neiman Marcus) and I have had 3 children! It’s been a very productive few years, and there are a lot of great tools out there that have helped me realize my dream as a small business owner. For example, I have used Bank of America since I launched my business and they have a suite of products that helps keep my books organized so I can focus on what I love to do, design stationery and spend time with my children. Bartering with other small business owners is another wonderful tool that has helped to save us a lot of money. I recently offered to design a logo for a celebrity publicist, and in exchange she has been giving us some fabulous public relations tips! Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have? Bonnie: My 3 children have greatly influenced my career path! I had the courage to launch my own business only because I knew that I wanted to be able to have a job in which I could work from home. Although my business has grown & is no longer operating at home from my kitchen table, it is wonderful to be able to leave work for drop-off and pick-up, PTA meetings and school concerts. My children often spend time at my office & they understand where “mommy goes” each day. Role Mommy: What’s your favorite “Time Out” tip for moms (taking time for yourself) Bonnie: With 10 employees to manage and 3 children under 5 years old, there is very little time for myself . . . . The one “luxury” I have is a Saturday night babysitter! Before going out on Saturday nights, my husband & I rarely saw each other or spent time together without the children. Being able to go out for dinner “as adults” either by ourselves, or with friends, definitely helps us get through the craziness of the week. Role Mommy: What does your website offer moms or kids? Bonnie: My website (www.BonnieMarcus.com) offers an amazing selection of products for “moms on the go” – from fashionable to-do lists and teachers gifts to tote bags and flip flops designed especially for moms and moms-to-be. Role Mommy: What do you hope for your own kids? Bonnie: I hope my own kids will appreciate their mom as a business owner and an active part of the community, and that they will strive to be responsible adults as well. A nursery school teacher once told me that in the playground my kids like to “play office” – they fix the computer, take out the garbage, etc. It’s very funny what kids pick-up from adults around them. My older son always says that he wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up, while my younger son wants to be a “ninja turtle” . . .we’ll see what happens! Role Mommy: Who is your Role Mommy? Bonnie: I would never be able to pick just one! I absolutely love websites like this one where I can learn from and be inspired by other working moms. Just when I think I have “too much to do” I read a post about a mom who is doing it all with 6 kids! I am inspired every day from these amazing stories . . .
Just did this cool thing on my Facebook page where I shared 25 random things you might not know about me. And so, I figured, why not share it with my favorite Role Mommies. And if you’d like to tell us some things about yourself that none of us know about, share a comment!

Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom? Megan: Before I became a mom I got a full night’s sleep, never left the house without makeup and was SANE. In my professional life before kids, I had over 15 years as a public relations executive and sales professional. Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life? Megan: I don’t think there was a certain moment, but as a full time stay-at-home mom I know I wanted to do something else once my oldest began preschool. Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have? Megan: I have two children – a 3.5 year old boy and a 19 month old girl. My children have inspired and influenced the direction of my life from the moment they were born. They completely changed my perspective on life and challenged me to be my best.
My children were my inspiration for writing my first children’s book called Oscar the Pig: Mommy Goes to Work (www.oscarthepig.com). Once my son experienced separation anxiety for the first time, I knew I wanted to help other moms out there. Separation anxiety is something every mother can relate to whether they are going back to work, dropping their children off at daycare or just trying to get a work-out in.
And, as a mother, I wanted to connect with other moms to share advice, tips and struggles so I launched www.twittermoms.com a social networking site for moms. In just two months it has exploded with thousands of moms joining! Role Mommy: What’s your favorite “Time Out” tip for moms (taking time for yourself) Megan: Make sure you get a few minutes a day to do something you enjoy whether it’s reading a few pages of a book, watching Oprah or talking a bath. It will make you a better mom! Role Mommy: What does your website offer moms or kids? Megan:TwitterMoms.com offers moms a fun and supportive place to connect with each other on a variety of topics including business, parenting or special interests. TwitterMoms has over 150 interest groups – there’s one for moms who love wine, fitness, green-living, blogging, moms of twins, teenagers, the list continues. Role Mommy: What do you hope for your own kids? Megan: My hope for my children is they grow up to be happy, positive and contributing members of society. And, always remember to be grateful for whatever life hands them. Role Mommy: Who is your Role Mommy? Megan: My role Mommy’s are all the moms on TwitterMoms.com. I have met and made friends with some extremely smart, fun and supportive women! They inspire me everyday and I am so grateful to all of them!
As a working mom, I’m usually the last person to see a doctor if I’m feeling under the weather. I’ve gone for weeks with terrible colds that almost became the flu or bronchitis and one time, thought I was having a heart attack and made my husband call 911 because I was experiencing shortness of breath and palpitations. Thankfully I was having an anxiety attack and not acute angina.
The reason I get so freaked out about my heart is because cardiovascular disease runs in my family – my dad had a heart attack two years ago and my grandfather died of a massive heart attack the year before I was born. Now I know I am only 39, but after a close friend lost her husband last year due to a sudden heart attack, I have been way more vigilant about the aches and chest pains I sometimes encounter after I’ve eaten some high cholesterol foods.
This morning, after meeting a friend for breakfast, I ordered an Irish Oatmeal and then proceeded to complain about the uncomfortable chest pain I had been dealing with that morning, she revealed how a former co-worker lost her own mother suddenly when she collapsed from a heart attack after complaining her jaw hurt. Considering I had never realized that jaw pain could be a warning sign for a heart attack, I decided to do a web search for symptoms relating to heart disease and I instantly found them at Real Age.
And for those of you who may have concerns about breast cancer, then check out Tracy Beckerman’s latest blog about her recent mammogram.
Now I don’t mean to scare you dear Role Mommies – I just want to make sure that while you’re busy pursuing your career and raising your kids, you don’t forget about taking care of yourself. Trust me, I’m the biggest offender but now I know if my jaw aches and I start getting nauseous, I may be paying a visit to my doctor stat.
