V-Day Gifts with a Tech Twist

i_30149.png Valentines Day is only a few weeks away, it’s time to think about gifts for the loves in your life. Those of you searching for alternatives to flowers and chocolates, look no further as Nintendo plays cupid this year with a variety of new game releases and technology that are perfect for best friends, family, and significant others.
For a gift with function and style, share one-of-a-kind gaming experiences with a match made in Valentine’s Day heaven: grab the latest games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 or nintendogs + cats with “Hers” pink or “His” red flame Nintendo 3DS units, available at a new lower price with brand new system updates – including the ability to record 3D videos in continuous or stop-motion style, updated Nintendo eShop features and enhanced online gaming. Those who play together, stay together. The whole family can also enjoy friendly competition and fun with Wii games, as well as watch movies together through Netflix.
There’s nothing quite like surprising your kids with an adorable puppy or kitten on Valentine’s Day, but not everyone is ready for (or wants) a pet. Share the puppy (and kitty) love anywhere you go with virtual pets from nintendogs + cats. Moms can also feel good about buying their kids’ very first “pet” with this fun and educational experience (good practice before a real pet). The best gift of all is the gift of time so why not spend some family time together on Valentine’s Day doing the things you love! There are several Wii and Nintendo 3DS games families can enjoy together that are not only a blast to play but…shhhh, don’t tell the kids…it’s good for you! Check out multiplayer games such as Mario Kart 7 (3DS), Fortune Street (Wii) and Wii Fit Plus. These are gifts that last and are sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Secretary of State Clinton & My Personal Dream Team

images-1.jpegAccording to the NY Times, it appears that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is thisclose to accepting President elect Obama’s offer to become Secretary of State. And in a matter of days, he’ll be announcing his cabinet. Frankly, I wish he consulted with me – because I think I have some great prospects he should totally add to the Obama dream team. Here are some of my picks:
Mike Bloomberg – put him in charge of all city budgets
Colin Powell – give him any job he wants. He deserves a second chance with a way better President.
Steve Jobs – Official White House IT guy
Whoever is running Blackberry – since Obama can’t send emails, they can act as his official email reader and responder – just need to come up with a cool name. How about BIC (Blackberry in Chief)@gmail.com
The guys at Google – they could launch a government search engine that makes us money back and helps reduce the deficit.
The other guys at Twitter – they can host private tweet ups with cabinet members sponsored by major corporations. First tweet up sponsored by Motrin.
The kid from Facebook – He could launch a page to re-connect past presidents, VP’s and world leaders.
The marketing teams at Disney and Nintendo – can help plan all social gaming activities for Malia and Sasha and create mini events and screening parties at the White House (my kids would like to be on that list)
Emeril Lagasse and the guys from California Pizza Kitchen – White House Chef and family friendly restaurant team.
The dog whisperer – official dog walker and trainer – once that puppy is adopted, the first family is going to need help pronto!
George Clooney – official MC at state dinners and fundraisers – I’m sure you’d get tons of attendees and if you auction off a date with George, just imagine how much more we could reduce our national debt?
Sarah Palin – Governor of Alaska – psych!!!

Check Out the Latest Games from Nintendo!

MCF 6.JPGOnce again, the folks at Nintendo have been very good to me and my family. A few weeks ago, I was invited to a cool cocktail party in conjunction with the launch of Nintendo’s holiday games. While many of them haven’t been released yet (you’re going to love the band game they’ve created for Wii), I was invited to a penthouse suite at a swanky hotel in midtown where I bumped into a few of my favorite mom bloggers, including Kim from Mom in the City, Jessica at New York City Moms blog, and Mary Warren at New York Metroparents and Robin with NYC Moms too.
As we sipped wine and sampled some appetizers, we were then called into a room where we were “interrogated” by a detective looking into the murder of Phil T. Rich. I felt like I was transported into a real life version of Clue and had a great time trying to solve the mystery. A few weeks later, we received the Nintendo game in the mail and my son and I have been having a great time tracking down the clues.
For some specifics on the game, here’s the lowdown straight from Nintendo:
MCF 1.JPGMystery Case Files: MillionHeir showcases a multitude of beautiful, intricately detailed painted scenes in which players seek out cleverly hidden items to progress through an interactive detective story. There are 12 potential heirs to examine, 30 detailed scenes to peruse and more than 1,000 hidden objects to find.
With the game’s intuitive touch-screen control, fans can quickly delve into the world of Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir and begin their investigation. Players use special analytical tools and interact with on-screen objects simply by using the Nintendo DS stylus.
Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir is the only Mystery Case Files game to include multiplayer options. In multiplayer modes, players can search for clues together or compete head-to-head. Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir also includes game-sharing with DS Download Play so friends and family can share the experience.
Characters: Phil T. Rich and a rich cast of possible heirs.
Mini-games: Finding hidden objects is not the only activity in Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir. Between investigations, players are presented with entertaining brain teasers that must be solved in order to progress. These mini-games add to the depth of the experience by including game-play mechanics that reach beyond the core searching elements. All of the mini-games use the Nintendo DS stylus in ways that provide a true Touch Generations experience.

Today, we’ve got two great giveaways…one from Role Mommy and another from Sports Equation.
If you’re ready and quick to comment, you may be the lucky recipient of a Nintendo DS and a Crosswords DS game.  I’ve got two to give away but what I want to know from you is what’s you’re favorite thing to do with your child?  Do you like riding bikes together, doing art projects or are you more a Guitar Hero afficionado?  Share your story with us and you can be a winner.  If the comment function gives you trouble, email us at beth@rolemommy.com.
Giveaway #2 comes to us from Sports Equation, a brand new company that is preparing to launch with their Major League Baseball Math Learning Card program. As they get set to release the product in stores, they’d also love to get some feedback from Moms with Kids in the 6-11 age group. So if you’d like a great giveaway for your kids and want to be a part of their focus group, send us an email at beth@rolemommy.com and we’ll send it out to you.
Sports Equation Program 3.jpgAs the Major League Baseball season heats up during the Summer, Sports Equation‘s products provide a fun, timely summer learning activity to keep Kids engaged in practicing math during the 2 month break from the classroom. Great learning activity for encouraging increased, meaningful dialogue between kids, and their moms and dads during long Summer trips in the car, or while taking a break at the pool or beach.

The Eagle Has Landed

wiifit.jpgI have to tell you Role Mommies, I sort of feel like a Publisher’s Clearing House winner or one of those Extreme Home Makeover families today.  Why do you ask?  Well let me tell you.  A limousine pulled up in front of my house today and out walked three athletic individuals who were just in the neighborhood dropping off a surprise present.  Okay, want to know what it was?  Get ready for it…A Wii FIT!!!!   Yes, I am the first on my block, the first in my neighborhood, probably the first person in Westchester to claim ownership of this prized possession that now sits in my basement waiting for me to hop aboard.

So getting back to this morning.  It had totally slipped my mind that the Wii Fit training team was going to be visiting, so I got dressed, hardly put on any make-up and slipped on a pair of incredilby holy (that would mean full of holes not actually the religious kind) socks.  The trio felt so bad for me that they reached into my brand new Wii fitness tote bag and handed me a pair of socks that I could wear on the balance board.  Then my private trainer Patrice started to put me through the paces.  We warmed up with some stretches, did a little yoga moves and then I even attempted a few push ups.  Then we were ready to assume the position.  It was Wii Fit Time!

After calculating my height and age, I hopped aboard and much to my delight, I am not overweight!  However, when I tried out a basic balance test, I learned that I am as fit as a 52 year old.  For those of you who don’t already know my age, I’m only 38.  Ouch.

And so, we got started.  First I had to pick a trainer – I decided to go with a female since Patrice had been so friendly during the warm-up.  We then did a few yoga exercises which I handled pretty well.  You have to work hard to stay in the zone and the balance board even shows you if you’re not doing the pose correctly – that thing is friggin’ ingenious.

Moving on to the “Let’s make a fool out of yourself category.”  I hopped right into the aerobics portion of the routine with the Hula Hoop game.  Move your hips in a wide circular motion and catch as many hula hoops as you can without being bopped in the head by one of them.   After a few tries, I actually got the hang of it and lasted about a minute rocking my hips all over the place.  I can only imagine the laugh these trainers got when they hopped back into their town car and hit the Big Apple.

But wait, there was more.  As my Wii Fit bank calculated how much exercise I had completed – 6 minutes for the day…go me – it was then time to try out a little balance training with some ski jumps.  While the trainers assured me that no one usually lands on their feet the first time around, I was determined to redeem myself.  And guess, what? I did!  I landed on my feet both times and during the second jump, I soared nearly 122 imaginary feet in the air!  What a head rush!

So before I knew it, my time with the Wii Fit team was over.  But they left me with a wonderful parting gift…my very own Wii Fit.  Now I can use it to set up my weight loss and fitness goals – I’m determined to be my own fitness age by at least July.  I can even program how much weight I’d like to lose and the Wii Fit will tell me how much exercise I’ll need to complete to look halfway decent for bathing suit weather.  While I’m contemplating giving it another whirl tonight, I think I may opt for something a little more relaxing since I caught a head cold from my daughter earlier in the week.  Lucky for me, it’s like Christmas around the Feldman household.  I received a box from Hachette Publishing filled with a dozen books from authors like James Patterson, Arianna Huffington, Kim Catrall (hello Sex & The City) and many many more!  So now here’s my dilemma – work out or curl up with a book on the couch?  That is the burning question.

A big thank you to the Nintendo team for making me feel like a million bucks today and for those of you wondering when you can get your hands on this priceless treasure, then set May 19 in your calendar.  That’s when the Wii Fit officially arrives in stores.  Or, if you’d like to come over and give it a whirl, maybe I’ll let you use it…psych!

Incidentally, I actually recorded video of myself trying out the Wii but by some strange stroke of luck, my Flip camera refuses to let me load it up to my computer.  And so, you’ll just have to imagine me looking like a fool today and if you run into Patrice and those two awesome Wii Fit reps, they can tell you yourself!

Jason Priestley & Role Mommy!

We recently had the chance to meet Jason Priestley when the fabulous folks at Nintendo invited our family to try out the new Mario Kart game on the Wii. Jason faced off against two great competitors (my kids) and then took a few minutes to speak with us about his guilty pleasure – video games and whether he’s going to pop up on the new 90210. This is a sneak peek and is still being edited, but for now, you can check it out! Oh, and after we met Jason, we got the kids something they totally loved (and we did too)…GUITAR HERO!!! Rock on!
