My family and I have been huge fans of Smashburger since they first opened their doors in Westchester a little over a year ago, so I was more than excited when I got invited to a private SmashBurger tasting at their newest location in White Plains!
Smashburger is the nation’s fastest growing better burger concept. The secret to their success is the “smash,” starting with 100% fresh, never frozen Angus Beef that is literally smashed on a 400 degree flat grill to sear in the the juicy flavor. To further the “better burger” experience, the delicious hamburgers are served on toasted artisan buns and topped with a selection of the freshest produce, real cheeses, and highest-quality condiments. We got to try 7 burgers from their tasting menu, including the Classic Smash, the Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger, the Spicy Veggie Black Bean, and the Avocado Chicken Club. They also had a delicious regional burger, an exclusive recipe that represents the unique flavors of New York. The New Yorker burger had cheddar cheese, garlic grilled onions, spinach, tomato, and peppercorn garlic aioli all on a brioche bun and it was absolutely delicious!!! The Smashburger representative also told us about the regional Brooklyn burger with grilled pastrami, aged Swiss, pickles, onion and yellow mustard on a pretzel bun. As a native Brooklynite, I begged them to have this available in Westchester! But if not, I guess I’m going to have to make a road trip out to Brooklyn soon to try it…my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
The burgers weren’t the only delicious thing on the menu. The SmashFries, which are tossed with rosemary, olive oil, and garlic were heavenly. I seriously could not stop eating them. Their salads also looked amazing and came in a massive bowl that could probably feed three people, although to be honest, I was too full from the burgers and the SmashFries to try them. But I did manage to save room for their milkshakes. The Oreo milkshake was very good, but the Peanut Butter and Jelly, a strawberry milkshake with nutterbutters, was AMAZING and easily the highlight of the tasting!!
Although the quality of their burgers are unparalleled, SmashBurger’s customer service really stands out in my book. The majority of the time when I go to a fast food restaurant, the staff look like they’d rather be doing anything else in the world but taking my order, but SmashBurger’s staff is friendly, polite, and fast on their feet. There was almost a 1:1 ratio of staff to customers which definitely contributed to my positive experience at the tasting, but the customer service has been exceptional every time I’ve gone to a Smashburger even when it wasn’t for an exclusive event. I can’t say that about any other fast food restaurant!
If you haven’t gone already, I would definitely recommend taking the family out for a meal at Smashburger as soon as possible! Check out their website for more information about their menu and to find a location near you.
Shopping for clothes with my tween daughter can either be really great or really painful. KidzVuz and RUUM invited my little fashionista and I to check out the new store at the Palisades Mall. And the experience? Really great! There are over 22 RUUM stores across the country with adorable (and affordable) children’s fashions. RUUM, launched in late March 2013, and was founded by Ezra Dabah, one of the foremost authorities in children’s wear. The former CEO of The Children’s Place who helped make sales that exceeded a billion dollars while expanding to 900 stores, is now back in the fashion fold.
The clothes run from Baby sizes all the way to size 14. It was too bad I didn’t have any baby gifts to buy, because the baby clothes were too cute and so soft. Instead I focused on my daughter and we began to shop!
My very picky tween walked around grabbing everything she thought was “omg, so cute!!” Next thing I knew my arms were full of clothes. Once she had made her way all around, we headed to the dressing room. Even the dressing rooms were cute. There were big peace signs that opened up so you could hand clothes out or take clothes in, such a cute touch, my daughter loved that. As you can see in the pictures, the clothes are right on trend without being too trendy and everything looked beyond adorable on her and was comfortable too.
Once she was all set with her fab finds, we headed over to the boy’s section to see if there were some good things for my 6 year old son. It was really hard to narrow down what to get for him, too many good choices. After we chose some shirts for my son, we checked out all the great shoes and accessories. Tons of headbands, hairbands, bracelets and hats too! Suri Cruise was even spotted carrying a RUUM ruffle bag.
The store itself is “totally fun” as my girl said. There are photo booths, stickers, paper airplanes and our favorite part… a candy bar! Your kid gets a little cranky? I bet a lollipop or some twizzlers will make them happy and give you more time to shop. If there isn’t a store near you, you can shop online at http://www.ruum.com/ruum/. There are some amazing sales going on right now, buy more and save more.
Awesome looks for my fashiontweensta… she’ll be rocking her new RUUM clothes in the fourth grade!
*Great news for all you Role Mommy readers! You could win a $250 RUUM SHOPPING SPREE! Click here for all the details and go to the KidzVuz website to create a video for your chance to win. Have your kids go back to school in style, good luck! I was provided with a gift card at this event, all opinions are my own.

Call me old fashioned, but I would rather see my kids playing with their Legos, reading or doing an art project, than playing on on a technical device. I do my best to limit the time on their iTouch, the Wii and even watching TV, which is not easy in this day and age. Even though they tell me they are playing an “educational” game, I know that Angry Birds will usually win out. Recently, I was lucky enough to receive the VINCI Tab, a tech device that I actually felt really good about giving to my five year old son.
VINCI Tab was created as a new category of fun learning tools with the goal to engage, empower and educate children. By using a teaching method designed by developmental psychologists, parents encourage their children to participate in constructive play and promote early learning. Unlike any other electronic toy or tablet, VINCI grows with the child by offering the award winning VINCI Curriculum, a step-by-step learning structure comprised of 43 learning subjects and 3 levels of assessment, and covers all 6 aspects of a child’s developing mind: Thinking Skills; Emotional & Social Skills; Language and Literacy; Math & Logical Reasoning; General Knowledge; and Science. The Tab is great for kids ages 2 – 9!
My son, who is in kindergarten, can not get enough of his new “kid iPad” he calls it. He is having so much fun, little does he know he is learning too! There are over 350 amazing Apps you can get (many of them are free!). There is a rubber holder around the touch screen to make it easier for the kids to hold… they really thought of everything. I highly recommend this educational device to anyone who wants to have their children incorporate learning and growing their brains while they have a blast playing with their tech device.

I love taking pictures. Some may even call me “obsessed”. I am constantly capturing moments with my kids and friends on my digital camera and on my phone. These are memories I love to look back on and share with everyone. For many of us, however, the pictures tend to be forgotten or left as unused photos that sit in the black hole of our phone for months. Now, the first free mobile website creation product, Zapd, introduces the concept of social websites, created within about one minute, helping to ensure every memory is shared – whether it be through photos, words or links.
For those not into social media, it creates a stand alone website… for those into social media, it can be shared through Facebook and Twitter. The big differentiator with Zapd, is that other people you choose are able to collaborate and post photos on your new site. Zapd 1.0 launched in early 2011 and quickly ranked in the top 10 on the iPhone App Store in 11 countries. It was also featured as iTunes’ app of the week for multiple weeks. With Zapd’s newest version, users will have the ability to not only create a website in 60 seconds or less from their iPhone, they will also be able to share and collaborate with friends, family and other Zapd users.
Some of what’s new in Zapd 2.0:
• Collaboration – invite others to make websites with you
• Easier, faster creation – batch uploads of photos
• Photo editing - filters, cropping and more image enhancing options
• Personalization - a dozen new themed layouts
• Feeds – discover and follow other Zaps and authors
• Easy integration – connect the app with existing address book contacts and Facebook friends
Zapd CEO and founder, Kelly Smith, has launched several successful start-ups, including Inkd.com, Imagekind, and RocketVox. “Zapd is about easily capturing an experience – either work or play – and sharing it in a new way, what we call a social website. All this can be done from the iPhone, which liberates millions of users and billions of photos to create themed chapters of their lives,” explains Smith. “Zapd is at the forefront of the changing direction for website creation, design and purpose. Either individually or collectively, Zapd puts website creation literally into the hands of everyday users, in the form of their iPhone.”

Ok ladies, admit it, we love to dress up. We watch the red carpet with envy, oohing and aaahing at the celebrities dripping in gorgeous jewelry. We even watch our little girls play dress up, wearing pearls and tiaras and wish we could dress up too. You know what I’m talking about, we like to feel like a princess – inside and out.
Unfortunately, spending a ton of money on jewelry becomes difficult when you have a family and responsibilities that take priority. Even more good news… exclusively for our Role Mommy readers, you can save 20% when you buy fabulous jewelry at SweepStreet.com. I adore Reese Witherspoon, I have loved her since ‘The Man in the Moon’. I am a huge fan of her movies and absolutely love her style. The mommy of 2 (soon to be 3), always looks amazing, Here she is wearing her favorite GLADYS flats from THE RACHEL ZOE COLLECTION while out grabbing Pink Berry in Brentwood with her hubby, Jim Toth. These sandals are really cute and you don’t need to be a celebrity to wear them. You can look just like Reese… the Rachel Zoe Gladys are available at Zappos, Shopbop, Nordstroms and more.
It happens to the best of us…you are about to leave for work and your baby or kid gets his/her breakfast all over your clean suit! You are all dressed up for a night out and your kids hug you goodbye with hands covered in paint! Lucky for us, we just found out about a product that’ll save you and your dry cleaning bill Koobli to the rescue!
Introducing koobli, the first easy-to-wear unisex garment designed exclusively to protect clothes from spills and stains associated with mealtimes, playtimes and other household messes you or your child can find a way to get into. Made from 100% micro polyester suede woven, koobli is lightweight and breathable, water and stain resistant, flame retardant and machine washable. It is the ideal solution for a host of potential everyday messes, including arts & crafts projects, eating in the car, feeding your pets and watering your plants.
Available in blueberry or cherry, koobli comes in two sizes – small/medium and large/extra large. It has two large pockets (handy for carrying pacifiers, bottles, baby food jars or small toys) and features elastic cuff protection at the wrists and a high collar with a Velcro fastener at the back of the neck.
koobli is the brainchild of mother and entrepreneur Dr. Lisa Belzberg and her business partner, Erin Pace. To prepare for the launch of koobli, the pair conducted focus groups, met with parents and listened to their many stories of how they – often futilely – have tried to protect their clothes and uniforms from the unpredictability of their little ones.
The perfect holiday gift for parents and caregivers, koobli retails for $25.00 and is available for purchase at www.koobli.com.
Most kids out there do not enjoy taking their medicine. Especially this time of year (half the kids in my son’s class including my son are out sick) we parents can use all the help we can get! KidKUPZ – (Created by NYC Mom and daughter team) is a new medicine dispensing cup with fruit-flavored rims that help make swallowing medicine easy and delicious for kids. Endorsed by a renowned pediatrician, KidKUPZ (SRP $4.99) is available at Walgreens in four flavors including Sour Cherry, Blue Raspberry, Watermelon and Green Apple.
“We launched KidKupz with the goal of making the act of taking medicine fun for kids–less of a chore and more of a treat,” says Jill Addeo, mother of two and President and co-Founder of KidKupz. Having a sick kid is difficult enough… getting them to take their medicine without a fuss sounds good to me!

Too busy to catch up on the news, entertainment and life in general? No worries, check out our Fave Five of the week and share some of your picks if we’re missing any!
1. You Again – Took my kids and husband to see this movie starring Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis and Betty White and LOVED it. If you were bullied in high school and lived to tell about it, or were the popular girl who regrets having tortured a few nerds who are now bazillionaires, then this is the film for you. You know it’s a hit when you leave the theater and your kids say – “Mom, I would totally buy this movie on DVD.”
2. Disney Resorts Announcement – We’ll have a more in depth post soon, but last week, I got to attend an event hosted by Tom Bergeron which featured a surprise appearance by Michael J. Fox (OMG). The event was produced by Disney Resorts to unveil its new campaign to turn the spotlight on vacationers and share the details on some of their latest offerings – including the launch of the Disney Dream – a new cruise ship with a 150 foot water slide that sends adventurers racing out over the ocean (in an enclosed tube of course). If you’ve been to Disney and have a favorite memory you’d like to share, your photos and video could potentially wind up in a commercial! Just head over to their Disney Resorts Facebook page and take a look…
3. Sandwich 101 with the Deen Bros. Paul Deen’s sons know how to make a mean sandwich and recently, I got the chance to meet them when they hosted a sandwich making event on behalf of the Grain Foods Foundation. The brothers shared with us how they launched their successful sandwich business – their mom sent them knocking on doors selling her tasty creations when they were kids and it paid off big time. Plus, they gave us some lessons in sandwich making and shared the recipe for the ultimate PB&J panini sandwich. Yummy! Visit the Go with the Grain Facebook page and enter to win the chance to spend a weekend with the Deen brothers. 4. The New Fall Collection at Ann Taylor Loft – had a mini shopping spree yesterday and since I am a sweater fanatic, I was over the moon to find that Loft has long comfy sweaters in all shapes, sizes and colors – but charcoal gray is definitely the color they’re showing most. Also picked up a pair of my favorite pants (I’m a Marisa – a curvy fit that sits below the waist) and a frilly gray t-shirt with flowers and a little bling. Plus, snagged a denim jacket that was on sale for $39.99 – happiness is…Sales! 5. Tasti D-Lite. I don’t know about you – but I used to love hitting Tasti D-Lite with my friends when I was still living in Manhattan and then, when we moved, I simply forgot about it because all we had in the burbs was Carvel, Ben & Jerry’s and the supermarket. Well, not anymore! Tasti D-Lite has ventured out of the city and into Westchester and I got the chance to enjoy a small Dutch chocolate cup with blueberries that was less than 100 calories and my daughter went for a scrumptious parfait filled with berries, chocolate ice cream and granola. Nothing makes me happier than ice cream that tastes great and is low in calories. Like a beer commercial for desserts. And if you are a die-hard Tasti D-lite fan like me, you can get one of their cards at the store and Tweet or Facebook about your love of Tasti-D and earn points for more treats. Soooo smart.
