Keep Your Kids Safe Online with Google

Last week I had the privilege of attending a wonderful blogger event at Google in NYC. Before I get in to the great Google search tricks and tips I learned for keeping my kids safe online, let me tell you this… working at Google is awesome. I’m not sure if my favorite part was the Lego area where you can sit and build at the Lego table just for fun. Or maybe it was the game room where you can let off some steam during lunch or on a break with your work buddies. I think it may have been the treadmill desks – talk about multitasking – get your work AND your workout done at the same time, brilliant! I know, it was definitely the food. There are two cafeterias where employees can eat (for free) and the food is amazing. Not to mention all the delicious snacks everywhere you turn. I believe the people who work at Google know how lucky they are to be in such a fantastic work environment and they work really hard!
Before you all go running to see if there are job openings at Google… here are some very important tips that will give you peace of mind while your kids are surfing the web. We live in a digital age, kids who can’t even walk and talk are playing on tablets and smart phones. It’s difficult to to police your children when they are online. Especially as they get a little older and they’re in their rooms and with their friends. Follow these simple guidelines and you won’t have to worry about them watching something inappropriate on You Tube or searching for something innocently on Google and stumbling upon something they should not see.
EASY TOOLS FOR SAFER BROWSING

YouTube SafetyMode
Turning on SafetyMode in YouTube is easy. Just scroll down to the bottom of any YouTube page and click on the button that says “Safety” at the bottom of the page switch it on. You can also log in with a YouTube account and lock SafetyMode as your default setting on each one of your computer browsers. It will filter out videos with mature content so they will not show up in video search, related videos, playlists, shows or films. It is also will help hide objectionable comments. Learn how to turn on and lock Safety Mode on YouTube.
SafeSearch in Google Search
Want to hide explicit images, search results, and videos? Turn on SafeSearch, a filter that keeps many of the adult results you might not want popping up on the family computer out of your Google Search results. While no filter is 100% perfect, with SafeSearch on you can feel more confident browsing the web with your family. You can also lock SafeSearch on your computer by logging into your Google account and changing your settings.
Flags on YouTube
On every single video on YouTube, there is a flag that you can use to report a video if you don’t think it is appropriate and violates YouTube’s Community guidelines, including content that is violent, sexual or hateful. Flagged videos and channels are reviewed by YouTube staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week to determine whether they violate their Community Guidelines. Flagged videos that violate our guidelines are removed from YouTube. Check out more tips at the YouTube Safety Hub.
Good to Know
Google’s Good to Know website is a onestop shop for information about the web and advice about how to keep yourself and your family safe and secure online. You can learn more about Google’s privacy and safety tools for families, get tips from parents at Google about family safety, and find out more what Google does to protect you, your family, and the Internet.
More Good to Know tips:
Secure password: Just as you have keys for your house, your car, and your bike, you should use different passwords for different important sites. Make them very hard to guess but easy to remember. Change them every so often.
2 step verification: Ensure that even if someone steals your password, they can’t get into your Google account. A tiny hassle that prevents huge headaches.
Incognito mode: When on someone else’s computer, use Incognito Mode or Private Browsing on Chrome to make sure no info gets stored.
Lock your devices: You don’t leave your front door wide open and unlocked. Treat your phone and tablet with the same precautions

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters

20th Century Fox ‘s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters comes to theaters on August 7th . Based on the publishing phenomenon, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and powerfully magic Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil. Starring Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Jake Abel, Douglas Smith, Stanley Tucci. Rolemommy sat down with Director Thor Freudenthal and the stars of the movie Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson and Leven Rambin to find out what is in store for the second installment of everyone’s favorite book series.
Rolemommy: Since this is the second movie, we were wondering if you were signed up for the series or if the first film was so successful that they made the second one.
Alexandra Daddario (Clarisse) filled us in, “Well, I think speaking for me, Logan [Lerman] and Brandon [T. Jackson], we’re locked in for three movies. And I think there’s something really cool about that, because you know that you’re joining something that could potentially be around for a long time.”
Rolemommy: Is it more difficult to do an original film where you already have fans or sequel of the book where you have diehard fans?
Director Thor Freudenthal, “Well, I did do the first part of another book series. And doing the first part of something is kind of hard, because you’re navigating the tone and the feel of a movie. You’re casting it from the ground up, in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, it feels like it took forever to find the Wimpy Kid and establish how much comedy, how much emotion you do.”
“Chris Columbus kind of had already done that to an extent. So, he had done a lot of the footwork of explaining the world and introducing the main character to the world. Since he had already done it, it gives you a level of freedom just kind of using it as a jumping off point and having, in a way, more freedom to explore the world further and expand it and play with the tone a little bit. I felt that the book series, to me, was very irreverent and funny, kind of like tongue in cheek. And we wanted to bring a little bit more of that into this movie. So, that was fun for me to do.”
Rolemommy: Seeing as these kids have very prominent mythological parents (these teens are known as half-bloods) what would you say would be the underlying message with this particular film?
Thor Freudenthal believes “The underlying message is we have a bunch of young people who have parents who are larger than life and mostly inaccessible to them. The kids kind of doubt themselves for the most part. So, the central message in this movie, looking at Percy and how he starts out at the beginning of the movie not trusting himself, his abilities and so forth, and throughout the movie, and you’ve only seen a half hour of it. But, in the movie, through himself and his friends, he gains the confidence that he needs to succeed on his quest. And that’s what you can do in life. “
Rolemommy: For the characters, you have so many children that look up to you. So, what’s some advice that you have for the children that adore you and adore your characters?
Logan Lerman (Percy) shared a personal story, “My father works at a children’s hospital, and he works with a lot of kids that are going through tough times. And they’re really excited about the fact that his son is Percy Jackson, and, now, every patient now brings their book. The movie makes them happy. And that goes for a lot of kids. So, it’s really cool, and that’s got to be one of the biggest benefits of doing a movie like this is. It’s a big movie and it’s a fun one to make. It is mainly for the kids, right? And it makes them happy, so it’s cool to be a part of a project like this in that way.”
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters comes to theaters on August 7th and Rolemommy will be bringing you more of our interviews with the stars this week.

Treated Like Royalty at the New York Palace

IMG_0585.JPGWhile the world awaits the arrival of a little prince or princess, one can only imagine the life that child is going to lead – growing up in a royal palace while traveling the world with his spectacular dad and gorgeous mom. Although I may never get to curtsy for the Queen, I can officially say that I did get to experience an evening where I was treated like royalty along with some of the most inspiring people I know while hosting a cocktail party in the Royal Suite at the New York Palace.
The event, which was held in celebration of the hotel’s 140 million dollar renovation which will be officially unveiled this fall, gave an exclusive group of bloggers, media gurus, marketing mavens, event planners and authors the opportunity to mix and mingle in a four bedroom suite while dining on delectable dishes, desserts and drinks, compliments of the New York Palace catering team.
Perched high above Manhattan’s metropolitan bustle on the 45th floor, the palatial four bedroom Royal Suite features 3,600 square feet of classic opulence and state of the art amenities. Rococo rooms revive French period décor, from the King Louis XV to the Napoleon eras, all furnished with luxurious silks and emblazoned with imperial golds. Brilliantly curated objects of art beautify your experience at every turn, while integrated design and technology details meet the highest standards of contemporary comfort and convenience.
candidspalace.jpg
While the Royal Suite is the perfect place to step back into the world of classic New York elegance, the hotel is in the process of renovating The Towers’ Rooms & Suites. The Towers is a separate and distinct part of The New York Palace, occupying the hotel’s top 14 floors. With a private reception area, accessible from the main lobby, the Towers come
complete with a dedicated Les Clefs d’Or concierge team, exclusively for The Towers guests. Elevators transport guests to floors 41 through 53, which house luxurious accommodations with spectacular skyline views.
royalpalace.jpg
From the luxe new lighting touches to the eclectic mix of materials and furniture, The Towers’ updated rooms and suites will invoke a decidedly ‘home away from home’ feel for its sophisticated clientele. A soft, subdued color palette places the main emphasis on one of the best features of The Towers – the breathtaking city views from the suites’ windows. Pops of color will also come from the mixed media artwork that adorn the walls, selected by art advisor Nancy Sweeney. Strong geometric elements punctuate the furniture, carpet, and textiles in the renovated rooms.
And let’s not forget the spectacular food! If you are planning a milestone event — from a wedding, baby shower, romantic proposal, honeymoon, anniversary or girlfriend getaway, while you’re being pampered by the incredibly attentive and friendly staf, you can dine in two restaurants or have your event catered with food provided by world renowned chefs.
The New York Palace’s new restaurant partner is Washington-based French Chef Michel Richard. Richard will contribute two new F&B spaces – Villard Michel Richard and Pomme Palais. This partnership marks Chef Richard’s New York debut.
