Power Up Your Brain with Dr. David Perlmutter

power up your brainThroughout my life, my mom and I have lived in fear. We’re not fearful of strangers, earthquakes, plane crashes, or other disasters. My mom and I are fearful of losing our memory. You see, my grandmother and great grandmother developed Alzheimer’s pretty early on in life and as a result, my mom has spent the greater part of her retirement attempting to stave off the disease by taking college courses at Florida State University, doing yoga, pilates, aerobics, playing canasta, and eating healthy foods. And guess what? What my mom is doing might be the answer to keeping her memory loss at bay.
I recently had the opportunity to host a roundtable discussion with Dr. David Perlmutter, the co-author of Power Up Your Brain: The Neuroscience of Enlightment. In Power Up Your Brain, Dr. Perlmutter and his co-author Albert Villoldo Phd. have devised a ground-breaking, five-week plan that helps prime the brain for enlightenment. With nutritional advice, dietary supplements, physical exercise, shamanic practices, meditation, and visualizations, Perlmutter and Villoldo guide readers, step by step, through a program to help them clear their minds from previous trauma and open themselves up to experience the inner peace, vast insight, and extraordinary creativity that define the experience of enlightenment, paving the way to successfully face the challenges to come.
Dr. Perlmutter shared how the book came to fruition and why the combination of neuroscience and enlightenment is crucial to our overall well being:

During our discussion, Dr. Perlmutter shared insight and offered advice on several topics including memory loss, autism, ADHD and MS. He also said that we should approach our health the same way we would our home and as John F. Kennedy remarked, “fix the roof when the sun is shining.” That means, the key to optimum health is in the hands of the healthy. Not only do we need to eat right, avoid processes foods and toxins, but we should also make sure our bodies have enough Vitamin D, DHA and magnesium to help ward off a slew of illnesses that can affect the brain.
When asked about heredity and whether we could do anything to prevent Alzheimers, this is what Dr. Perlmutter had to say:

We will be sharing additional video commentary and tips from Dr. Perlmutter over the next few weeks and hope that by the time you’ve seen our entire discussion, you’ll be enlightened and empowered to take care of your body and your brain!
In the meantime, thanks Dr. Perlmutter for all your invaluable advice. I’ve been taking my supplements every day now and feel great. Time to start cracking on that five week plan!

Ask Single Mom Walking

young couple beachDear Single Mom Walking:
My boyfriend went on his yearly “guys only” vacation to the Bahamas. One of the pictures he showed was of him arm in arm with this really cute girl. He says nothing happened but he just looked a little too “cozy” with her.
To Believe or Not To Believe
Dear to Believe or not To Believe:
Don’t you hate when that happens and all you have to show for your time away from him is a clean toilet and a yard free of dog poop?
I have to say that my jealousy over the fact that he went on vacation and I did NOT would likely outweigh my wonder as to whether he was poking his nose into places it shouldn’t be.
Ok, yeah, you probably don’t want envision that one.
However, you might want to ask yourself if you really want to be with a guy who is enough of a dumb ass to show any photo like this to his girlfriend, especially if, as he claims, he never even fooled around with her.
Seriously, this guy is one knife short of a whole set if you ask me? Or is it not the sharpest one in the…? Yeah, okay, whatever, who cares. Sure I have just proven myself to be a complete and utter moron, but at least I didn’t run home to my boyfriend and show him a photo of me licking the groin of some Bradley Cooper look alike while trying to pass it off as just your average beach day.
You see what I’m getting at? Exactly. I dream of licking Bradley Cooper daily and your boyfriend is potentially an idiot.
That aside, there is the fact that he may be telling you the truth here. I know many a man who, if given the chance to touch a pretty girl, would grab it and yes, sometimes never want to let her go but the reason could be as innocent as:
Peer pressure to not look like the kind of guy who is so dominated by his girlfriend that every time he goes out he leaves his balls in a jar on her nightstand.
The fact that his and every man’s brain has the ability shut down on a moment’s notice, leaving his penis in charge and therefore rendering him absolutely unable to stop touching either himself or any woman within five feet of him.
or
She reminded him of his favorite stuffed animal.
So to sum it up, you asked him, you got your answer and now you have to decide whether he really is a dumb ass or he’s just your average guy. I tend to listen to my instincts on matters of the heart, my health and whether or not I’m going to go with the fish or the chicken and nine times out of ten, I’m very grateful that I did.

5 Home Office Organizing Ideas

00444155.jpg5 Organizing Ideas to make your Home Office Function with Style by the Organized Mom
· Decorative bulletin board – Find a board that is nicely framed and use it to post account numbers, codes, or your FIN (Federal Identification Number). When you need this information, it only takes a glance instead of searching your files or computer. The frame also makes this tool look like art.
· Corner desk – Some people like facing their office door, but this can be very distracting when pets or people walk by. A corner desk offers a lot of extra surface and storage space and takes up far less square footage than a desk in the middle of the room.
· Decorative boxes – If your desk does not offer much storage space, use decorative boxes to organize additional office supplies. These boxes hold the not-so-pretty extra office supplies you do not need in your desk now. When you purchase supplies such as Post It notes or pens and notepads in large quantities keep a few in or on your desk, and the rest in the storage boxes. When your supply gets low, the extras are hidden, but close at hand.
· Letter trays – Letter trays are often used on desks to hold papers that are just postponed decisions. Weeks and months of collecting will produce a pile of clutter so overwhelming that you feel paralyzed to do anything about it. Use letter trays to only hold items you use for daily tasks such as notebook for Passwords, directories, tablets, envelopes, and a business card binder.
· Electronic cord organizer – Organize the mess of cords on top of, down the sides, and behind your desk with the line of SIGNUM cable management products from IKEA.

Alma’s Easy Roast Lemon Chicken

roast chickenAfraid of giving your friends and family salmonella? This easy and moist chicken technique will allay your chicken-y fears forever. Enjoy!
Easy Roast Lemon Chicken
5 lb chicken (I used an organic one but it cost 20 bucks!!!!)It’s about 18 minutes per pound if you decide on a smaller chicken
2 lemons (this gives a great flavor AND keeps it moist)
olive oil, about 1-2 TBS
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Wash your chicken off by rinsing it.
If there are chicken livers inside a bag in your chicken’s cavity, boil it up, chop it and put it in your dog’s food 🙂
pat your chicken dry and place it on a baking rack. Place the baking rack on a tin foil lined cookie sheet.
Take the two lemons, wash them and prick them with a fork all over. Stick them up the chicken’s arse.
Lay the chicken breast side down so the breasts stay moist.
Pour the olive oil on top of the chicken and rub it all over the chicken.
salt and pepper the chicken all over.
Stick it in the center rack of the oven and bake about 18 minutes for every lb. I baked my 5 pounder for 90 minutes and it was perfecto.
You know it is not raw if you stick a knife into the fattest part of the thigh and the juices are clear and not cloudy. To make absolute certain, stick a meat thermometer into the thigh and a perfect chicken will read 160 degrees.
Stay tuned for what I did with the leftovers the next night!!!
