The day I’ve been waiting for is about to arrive (yes, I am a musical theater fanatic!!!). For the first time in 45 years, the entire cast of the Sound of Music will be reuniting on the Oprah Winfrey Show on October 28 and the show promises to include a performance from the singing group The von Trapp Children, which features members of the real von Trapp family.
For Sound of Music lovers who still hum “Maria” on the way to work and are huge fans of “Glee” (that would be me), Legacy Recordings, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are proud to announce the release THE SOUND OF MUSIC: 45th ANNIVERSARY EDITION. The CD will include the soundtrack from the much-loved film, plus a vibrant new recording of the film’s signature tune, “My Favorite Things,” sung by “Glee” star Lea Michele (love that!)
And if you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does. For the first time since 1973, The Sound of Music twirls back into nearly 500 theaters nationwide in stunning high definition to commemorate the beloved musical’s 45th anniversary. The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event includes the sing-along version of the fully restored feature with classic songs that have delighted fans for decades, such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
Nintendo Art Academy Review
Recently, my kids and I got to attend a really cool event at the Whitney museum in New York City hosted by the folks at Nintendo in anticipation of the release of their latest DS game Nintendo Art Academy. If you ever wondered how artists develop a sketch into a full fledged painting, then this is the ideal game for you.
There are 10 art lessons included in the game that offer step by step instructions on sketching, shading, painting and more. Plus, you can even take a picture with the Dsi camera and transform it into a black and white image and then re-create it in free hand. Take a look…
Plus, there are incredible gallery photos that are included with Art Academy that you can also re-create – I happen to love the penguins but my daughter opted for a shot of a cute dog and proceeded to turn the image into a black and white version, added a grid over it and then started to create her own picture.
Art Gallery is so intricate that the lessons even offer suggestions on what pencils and paint brushes you should use while crafting your piece. Check out this video featuring a children’s book illustrator who got the chance to try out Art Academy and highly recommends it to budding artists.
As someone who has always loved art but struggled to re-create anything except a Snoopy or Charlie Brown caricature, I really enjoyed taking the art lessons and actually being able to re-create images and photos. Plus, here’s the best part of Art Academy – you can paint to your hearts content and never make a mess!
Art Academy retails for $19.99 and is available in stores beginning this week.

Win a treasure chest filled with Pirate’s Booty!
With just a few more days until Halloween I hope everyone has their costumes ready to go and something to give out to those trick or treaters when they come knocking at your door! Some parents are terrified thinking about the amount of candy their children are going to consume. “Halloween can be a challenging time for parents who encourage their kids to eat healthy throughout the year,” said Emily Whelan Anschlowar, MS, RD, and in-house nutrition expert at Pirate Brands, makers of all-natural snacks including Pirate’s Booty.
Here are some “Healthy Halloween” tips from Pirate’s Booty:
• Fill ’em up. Feed children a full, nutritious meal before heading out to trick-or-treat. That way they’ll be less likely to devour candy while out on the trail.
• Trade agreement. Offer coins or a coveted toy in place of the candy.
• Cavity cutback. Some dentist offices have actually started implementing candy buyback programs the day after Halloween. Kids receive a monetary reward, while the candy gets shipped to different organizations like U.S. troops abroad.
• Treat others. Donate sweets to a local food bank.
• Divide and conquer. Measure out the candy into individual serving sizes. Two to three little treats after a meal will fill that sweet tooth.
• A helping hand(out). Distribute non-candy treats such as a baked, low-fat snack like Pirate’s Booty.
Send me a picture of your little matey in a pirate costume with your name and address and you could win a treasure chest filled with jewels, eye patches, swords and of course, delicious Pirate’s Booty! Send pictures to danielle.rolemommy@gmail.com by Tuesday November 2nd.
