This week, we got the chance to host a fun filled family event with Kim at Mom in the City where we introduced our favorite parenting bloggers to the brand new Imagination Playground, designed by world renowned architect David Rockwell and located at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City.
Rockwell Group project designer Barry Richards provided us with a grand tour of this spectacular location for kids that comes complete with an aqua theater, building blocks, a sand area with real sailing masts, hammocks, climbing structures and much more! Check out our Whrrl slide show.
Next, find out more about the Imagination Playground with this fun video from the event.

Chris Evert's Tips to Great Health
I recently got the chance to meet one of my all time favorite tennis players...Chris Evert! When I was growing up, I became hooked on tennis at nine years old and loved watching Evert play against Martina Navratilova year after year. And every match I watched, I was always cheering for Chris. She was just one of those players who you wanted to root for - she seemed so friendly, so down to earth and so real.
Well, fast forward more than three decades and I was beyond thrilled to have been given the opportunity to meet Chris Evert in person at an event hosted by Simply Smart Milk. Evert is an official spokesperson for the brand and was on hand to show bloggers how we can incorporate Simply Smart's milk -- which happens to be thicker than typical fat free varieties -- into a host of recipes - from crepes, to muffins, to pot pies, chocolate martinis and more! Plus, if you visit the Simply Smart website today, you can enter to win the chance to win a VIP tennis weekend with Chris Evert, get yummy recipes, coupons and even watch Chris chat about some of her most memorable tennis moments.
At the event, Chris shared how she incorporates Simply Smart milk into her busy lifestyle - she's a mom of three kids who are interested in extreme sports (tennis is too boring for them, she says), runs the Chris Evert tennis center in Boca Raton, FL, where she trains budding athletes for college and professional sports, is one of the publishers of Tennis Magazine, owns a children's hospital and much more. Chris also shared amazing and funny anecdotes about her life as a mom, athlete and role model for moms everywhere!

Candace Cameron Chats with Role Mommy
I don't know about you, but one of my guilty pleasures growing up was watching shows like "Full House," "Growing Pains" and "Family Ties." There was something about those great looking teen hearthrobs and the kids who starred along with them that made me want to jump through the screen and be a part of the action - even if it was just for one 22 minute episode.
While I'm still here pining away, secretly hoping that one day I'll have a chance encounter with John Stamos or Michael J. Fox (a girl has to dream), I recently did meet one child star who is now all grown up with a full house of her own. Actress Candace Cameron Bure - you might remember her best as DJ Tanner on "Full House" (admitting you have an addiction to 90's TV is the first step in recovery) - is now a mom of three tweens, is happily married to gorgeous retired LA Kings hockey star Valeri Bure, and stars in the ABC Family series "Make it Or Break It." And she looks absolutely amazing!
We got the chance to interview Candace this week when she was busy promoting the 30th birthday of the juicebox. To celebrate this milestone, families can potentially win $2500 and a year supply of juice boxes if you visit Juice Box Birthday and enter the Juicebox Jamming music video contest. I don't know about you, but as a serial juice box consumer and song parody aficcionado, this contest may be right up my alley.
Check out our interview with Candace and find out how she manages to balance work and family and never misses a beat!

Chelsea Clinton Wedding Video!
I'm a sucker for anything involving the Clinton family so had to post this video from Associated Press that was recently released sharing some footage from her wedding. She looked absolutely gorgeous!
My only question about the nuptials - why did all the New York newspapers only show Chelsea and her dad? Where are the pix of Hillary? Can't believe the mom of the bride got snubbed. But not here at Role Mommy! Check out this gorgeous photo of Chelsea, her new hubby, her dad and mom dressed in a breathtaking fuschia Oscar de La Renta gown. She needs to wear colors more often!

Keeping Kids Busy on Summer Road Trips
Find more videos like this on Role Mommy
I'm sure you've been there before. You've packed snacks, shoved your luggage, roller blades and tennis rackets in the trunk, jerry rigged the bike rack to the car, gassed up and are finally ready to hit the open road. What you may fail to anticipate however, is the bumper to bumper traffic you'll be sitting in while your kids pester you from the back seat with the dreaded question - Are We There Yet???
As a road trip warrior, I've got some great game and gadget options that'll keep kids of varying ages entertained as you traverse the highways and byways of our glorious country. So what's the secret behind a smooth summer road trip with your family? Here's our Fave Five:
1. Nintendo DSi XL - We received a complimentary DSi XL to review when it was first released this spring and my kids have been fighting over it ever since it arrived on our doorstep. So what's so great about about the DSi XL? Well, the screen is way bigger than the traditional DSi, there's also built-in educational software including Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: Arts Edition and a comprehensive dictionary - which my husband loves since he's a walking thesaurus - but more on him later. There's even an option to create your own digital short movies complete with audio...I've even created a few Peanuts movies of my own since I'm proficient at stick figures, Snoopy and Woodstock. As with the Lite, XL owners are also able to download games through the Nintendo DSi Shop and create and share photos - which my kids happen to love!!! Of course, there are also plenty of game options - including the brand new Mario Party 8 for DS , Atari Sandlot Sluggers, Style Savvy and one of my personal faves - Scribblenauts!
2. Bring Books to Life with Your iPhone, iTouch or iPad - Whenever my kids are completely bored, they ask me to hand over my iPhone so they can download apps to pass the time away. But thanks to the folks at MobiStories, I now have the upperhand! If you want to really knock your kids socks off, then try out the latest innovation in children's book technology with the debut of The Marvelous Toy - a digital and musical children's book now available on MobiStories on PC's, iPhones, iTouch and the iPad. Your kids will be mesmerized as they touch the screen and the images are literally brought to life in front of their eyes. Plus, in addition to their latest release, Mobistories offers a host of downloadable picture book options for kids ages 2-10.
3. A DVD Double Feature - Turn your laptop into a movie screen or better yet, pick up an inexpensive DVD player you can strap to the back of your seat so that your kids can catch their favorite movies - incidentally, "Alice in Wonderland" was just released this week on DVD and in my house, "The Tooth Fairy" is a current must-see (at least a dozen times or more). And hopefully, if you're not driving, you can grab a seat in the middle, whip out a bag of popcorn and watch right along with them. Another option, take the quiet time to read on your Kindle, iPad or crack open a good book...now that's a novel idea!
4. Mad Libs - If your kids are proficient at potty words (ie. poop, fart, etc), they will have an absolute blast filling in the blanks to the age old road trip conversation starter - Mad Libs. We actually gave these out at my daughter's birthday party and they have taken up permanent residence in our car. Funny, but when I used to play with Mad Libs way back when, I thought my stories were hilarious too.
5. The License Plate Math Game - I have to give credit to my husband on this one. Whenever we're in the car, he will encourage the kids to add the numbers in a license plate and whoever gets the answer quicker, wins the points. They do the same thing with the alphabet - they look for every letter in the alphabet and call it out as a car is whizzing by. Obviously, the driver should not participate in this game, but my hubby can't help himself - he's very competitive.![]()
Do you have any summer road trip tips? We'd love to hear them!

M&M Pretzel Commercial: Things that Make You Go Yum!
While summer TV is in full swing and I'm hooked by America's Got Talent - what can I say, between hand whistling, a tap dancing family and two funky little kids, I'm enjoying every minute of it. But imagine my surprise that I'm even finding myself cracking up in between breaks.
You've gotta love the copywriting geniuses who came up with this latest ad for M&M's pretzels. Not only am I going to be searching for them tomorrow at the train station, but I'll be thinking about this commercial every time I see it!
Have you seen a favorite commercial lately that's had you laughing out loud (or LOL for teens and texters)? There used to be a time when I used to look forward to commercials but now, I can flick to a new channel or DVR my favorite show and fast forward through the ads. But I say, take a few minutes and enjoy the creativity, people! Some of the most talented people I know work in advertising - so give them a chance and start watching their magic on screen again.
In the meantime, if you'd like to take a trip down memory lane, then enjoy these ad blasts from the past.
I'd Like to Teach the World To Sing...
I Wish I Were an Oscar Meyer Weiner...
How Many Licks Does it Take to Get to the Center of a Tootsie Pop?
Hold the Pickel, Hold the Lettuce...
There are more where that came from but all these commercials are making me hungry.

Despicable Me: Interview with Steve Carrell
In "Despicable Me," Carell voices Gru, a villain who finds great pleasure in doing deliciously wicked things to other people. Whether it's freezing a long queue of customers ahead of him at a coffee shop, or creating a balloon animal for a small boy only to pop it in front of his face, Gru gets to do all of the dastardly things we only wish we could.
Gru is on track to become the greatest villain of all time by committing the crime of the century, but when he adopts three orphan girls to unwittingly help him break into the heavily secured compound of his enemy, Vector, he never imagines they'd melt his icy heart and turn him into a softie.
Carell says he enjoyed watching the character develop and at one point, Gru knows his kids are in jeopardy and he storms Vector's lair to save them. That's when Carell knew that Gru had become a dad, "Because as a parent, you would throw yourself under a bus for your kids and not even think about it. There's not a split second of hesitation. It's like, he punches a shark, and is just like "Nope!" and keeps going. It becomes about them and you'd do anything for your kids, so I totally identify with that."
To Carell, the movie has a bigger message than an evil man turned good guy, "It's the quintessential journey of becoming a parent. That to me is really the story. Someone has their life structured the way they want, or think that's how they want it to be. Then you introduce kids and it changes and you can't explain it to someone who's about to have kids how it's about to change. The common thread is it changes everything: how you think about yourself, your work and your life, and how you view the world around you."
And just when you think Steve Carell is winning awards at home, he reminds us once again that he is just a normal dad, trying to impress his kids, "No matter how cool you think you are, your children always bring you back to earth." He adds, "When we were leaving the theater after seeing "Despicable Me," my son thought the movie was great but ask why I didn't play a minion."
Listen in to more of our interview with Steve Carrell and then check out this featurette from the film. "Despicable Me" opens in theaters nationwide July 9.
