Food Glorious Food
This week, Role Mommy got the chance to meet Tim Gannon, chef extraordinaire and co-founder of Outback Steakhouse. Sitting with some of my favorite bloggers, like Kim at Mom in the City, Issa at Single NYC Mama and Aly Walansky at She Knows, we took our seats, and before we knew it, we were ready to start tasting steaks.
But not so fast...before we had our first bite, we were given the story behind the famous Outback Bloomin' Onion and even got to see first hand how they are able to turn those 16 ounce onions into works of art with a machine that can transform an onion into what looks like a Japanese flower in less than a second. Hmmm...I wonder if they sell that contraption at Williams Sonoma.
Tim then went on to tell us about all the affordable and delicious options on the menu and we proceeded to taste sirloins, prime rib, tenderloin, steak teriyaki, lobster tails, garlic potatoes with butter cream, flavorful veggies, and a mouthwatering chocolate brownie for dessert. After I couldn't take another bite, I started to feel like that girl in Willy Wonka who eats the everlasting gobberstopper and turns into a blueberry blimp.
While I was coming out of my food coma, Tim shared how Outback has changed their menu to reflect the latest dining trends. That means, rather than serve patrons a 24 ounce steak, they're offering healthier options with entrees that include smaller beef portions, shellfish and vegetables. And, while the economy has taken a hit, Outback is actually making it more affordable to eat out. Outback now offers 15 menu options under $15 - like lobster and steak! Or a teriyaki steak dinner that's only $9.95. And for weight watchers like myself - they even offer steak entrees that are under 500 calories. Plus, there's even a gluten free menu for customers with food allergies. Oh, and did I mention the kids meals offer everything from mini steak, to mac and cheese, burgers and much more - all for $6 and under! They've obviously thought of everything...and judging from our tasting...they have not only covered all the bases - they've hit it out of the park.
It was also re-assuring to learn that Outback monitors the quality of its food through the use of bio-thermometers in the kitchen - they're able to tell exactly what temperature the food is so that they don't undercook it. And they prepare everything from scratch and train their staff so that chefs worldwide can perfect their mouthwatering recipes right on the premises.
As we head into July 4th weekend where many of us will be grilling up steaks and burgers, why not give your barbecue a break and head to Outback where you can feed your entire family at a fraction of the price? Or, you could always order takeout and serve it up right at home. Hmmm....looks like this year's barbecue is going to feature a Bloomin Onion! Mmmm, mmmm, good.

If You Knew Suze, Like I Know Suze
This past Friday, I received a special invitation by Avon to meet personal finance guru Suze Orman for her very first "Tweet Up" with bloggers. At first, I thought there would be hundreds of people there and I would probably get a chance to just smile and snap a Blackberry photo of her. Boy, was I in for a big surprise!
The moment I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly Avon staff and then, after following a few Twitter bird signs, I entered a conference room and saw a few familiar faces - like Aly Walansky, who is a fabulous beauty blogger and Issa with YourSingleParenting.com.
After we had all taken our seats around a conference table (yes it was that small of a group!) Suze made her entrance and took the entire place by storm. Her candor and humor is infectious and even when she's giving you hard hitting advice that may be tough to take, you know she is telling it like it is and only wants to help you succeed and dare I say, MAKE MONEY!
And that's why I believe Avon was brilliant in assembling a group of female bloggers - many of whom share their thoughts, recommendations, interviews, beauty tips, financial advice, essays and reviews without being compensated for their content. As mainstream magazines are folding left and right and the online world is the place where all brands want to be, bloggers are helping to feed the beast by constantly providing free content to mainstream outlets without being compensated for their work. And with the help of Suze Orman, our lives and perspective about our work and our worth was about to change.
Avon, which was the first company in the United States to empower women to make money, now helps millions of individuals earn a living or additional income so that they can afford to buy or do the things they love. And that's exactly why Suze Orman decided to partner with the organization - aside from the fact that her own mom was an Avon representative in 1962 and she revealed that her additional income from Avon helped support their family.
During the breakfast, we all found out that Suze's road to success was pretty rocky. She never graduated college and earned a living as a waitress at the age of 30. Her career prospects changed after a brokerage firm lost $50,000 that was loaned to her so she could open a restaurant and she decided to become a broker in an industry dominated by men, determined to earn that money back. Surviving on Taco Bell and living out of her car, Suze managed to turn her life around, became an expert in personal finance and the rest is history. She also revealed that while her books have sold millions of copies, she didn't publish her first one until she was 45! Translation - it is never too late to reinvent your life, start doing what you love and make a living along the way.
During the Tweet up, I managed to snag some amazing quotes from Suze. But before we get to them, I wanted to inform our readers of a few more great things about her. First up, if you follow her on Twitter @suzeormanshow and you ask her a finance question, she will answer you. Suze answers all questions on her Twitter account so if you think someone else is writing you back, it's actually Suze, how cool is that?
Next, I was genuinely touched to see how incredibly supportive Suze Orman was to the group of women who attended the event. A handful of women had been laid off with some even facing their last unemployment check and Suze as well as other attendees at the breakfast offered them advice and ongoing support. Plus, rather than looking at a layoff as a negative, Suze congratulated the women about their good fortune since they now have the chance to wipe the slate clean and do what they love.
And now for all the amazing quotes and advice I managed to Tweet from the event...
"Suze Orman created an account with TD Ameritrade SaveYourself.com. Save money and put it away. TD Ameritrade pays you $100! #avontweetup

---This was in reference to how we should approach investing and our 401K's in a turbulent market. It turns out that Suze is working with TD Ameritrade - if you visit the site SaveYourself.com, you can save money and TD Ameritrade will pay you $100 to deposit funds with them. Additionally, Suze suggested for those of us no longer working in corporate America, we should rollover our 401K's into an IRA that then eventually roll that over into a Roth IRA.

-That's how Suze has built her own brand too and she says she never buys anything she can't afford. She only uses the money that she has earned after taxes from new opportunities to make her purchases.

And the best Tweet of All...
@suzeormanshow "Changing lives one tweet at a time"
9:33 AM Jun 19th from TwitterBerry
After two hours, the discussion finally came to a close and then they held a raffle drawing to win all of Suze's books. And guess what? Even though yours truly never wins anything...and I repeat anything, I won!!! So watch out Role Mommies - the moment those books arrive, I am going to become a finance fiend.
Thank you to Avon for inviting me to be a part of one of the most exciting events I've ever attended and to Suze Orman for her heartfelt advice, inspiring story and giving spirit. To find out more about Avon and the incredible work they have accomplished in support of entrepreneurs and women's causes, then visit AVON.com for more information about their foundation. And if you want a Suze fix, tune into her show on CNBC - which happens to be the #1 show on the network - visit the Suze Orman website or better yet, give her a Tweet @suzeormanshow. Trust us, you're eyes will light up and you'll be grinning from ear to ear the moment she answers you back!
To top the morning off, there was a professional photographer snapping away and I even got to take a shot with Suze - I think you can tell my from my enormous grin that I had a great time. What a way to spend a morning. Now time to make some money!

Role Mommy Interviews Kelly Ripa!
During one of the most humid days of the year, Role Mommy had the opportunity to interview one of our favorite talk show hostesses on the planet...the one and only Kelly Ripa. We caught up with her at the Boat House in Central Park where Kelly announced an innovative fundraising initiative by Electrolux to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research.
Kelly even took a few minutes to sit down and chat with us and pose for photos and I have to say, while I normally take great pains deciding what I'm going to wear when I'm standing next to someone who has the most toned arms on the eastern seaboard next to Michelle Obama, I must have been sleepwalking that morning. You see, while I thought my eggplant colored Diane Von Furstenberg flouncy top was quite trendy and fashionable, it actually made me look four months pregnant next to the fabulously fit Kelly Ripa.
Further complicating matters, I had a big ol honkin' stain on the front of my shirt which I just noticed in a photo snapped by Sarah at Genesis Moments. Also pictured is Jennifer who pens the blog Connect with Your Teens Online who shot the photo on the right of Kelly pouring a glass of gourmet lemonade.
I have to admit, if Glamour Magazine were following me around that day, I would have received the biggest fashion don't of the century. Since the event was outdoors, my wavy locks went berserk and just grew wider by the minute. And speaking of wide - what was I thinking putting on those culotte shorts anyway? But enough about me - I was there to interview Kelly and I have to say, it was a total thrill to sit down and chat with her. We instantly hit it off when I told her that one of my first friends at grad school was none other than "Schully" - one of Regis' favorite producers on the show. Plus, we even have the Hamptons in common - she has a summer home tucked away in the woods of Southampton and my folks have a house in the same town - and she was even nice enough to tell them she says "hello!" When I asked her why I never see her at my favorite Southampton furniture store (Hildreth's), Kelly replied that when she's on vacation with her family, she never leaves the house. Funny, but when I'm on vacation at my mom's house, my DH and I escape for date night without having to pay a babysitter.
Check out the video below for our interview with Kelly and if you're wondering why you don't see me in the shoot, I cropped myself out so there wouldn't be any trace of my fashion, hair and flabby arm debacle on camera.
After my moment in the hot seat was up, I found it so refreshing to find that Kelly Ripa is truly the real deal. She's classy, hilarious, endearing, giving and truly the perfect spokesperson for Electrolux - and did I mention how much I love those Bewitched commercials?
For more information on how you can open your own Virtual Lemonade Stand to help raise funds to support Ovarian Cancer Research, plus enter to win a top of the line two door stainless steel refrigerator that Kelly raved about in our interview, visit Electrolux today!
And one last thing...Sarah edited this fun video featuring Amy at Selfish Mom, Jennifer at Connect with Your Teens Online and me! On the way back to work, I gave the gals a behind the scenes tour outside Regis and Kelly's studio since I used to cart stars all over town in my former life. So enough of this writing...let's go to the videotape!

Build it And They Will Come
From the time I was a kid I have always loved being on stage. And so, when I got the chance to take the mic at Comic Strip Live a few days ago with some of my favorite mom authors, writers and bloggers, that little skip in my step that I usually get when I'm on to something exciting, completely took hold of me.
You see, I'm actually in the midst of putting together a humor anthology called C://Mom Run: Side-Splitting Essays from the World's Most Harried Blogging Moms and when City Dusk asked me what I kind of event I'd like to host for moms this Mother's Day, readings from my new book popped into my head. And so, within minutes, I fired off emails to my talented team of contributors and within seconds, they all said they wanted to be a part of the night.
In the weeks leading up to the event, I asked everyone to send their essays to me so that I could see how each would flow into the next. Then my good friend, Audrey Pass, who heads up PR for Fox 5 NY suggested that the station's technology reporter and former stand-up comic Brett Larson would make a great emcee. While I would have normally gone with a mom host for the night - Brett turned out to be the perfect choice.
Meanwhile, as I pored over essays about diaper explosions, restaurant nightmares, unorthodox Rosh Hashana memories, naked kids and more, I started to envision how these honest and hilarious stories would play out on stage. Plus, some of the essays that I had been editing came in from some incredibly gifted writers from Chicago and Los Angeles and I decided I wanted to use their stories in the show as well. And so, I did what any connected mom would do - I reached out to Wendy Stetson, a blogger friend and actress and she agreed to read one of the stories. She then brought in another colleague, Katie Firth, an actress and mom and we then combined the two stories and worked to perfect the act on stage.
The night of the event, we asked all our performers to arrive early so they could participate in a video shoot with our title sponsor, Luvs. From there, they asked each of us our personal mantra on motherhood and my response was simple. When you're a mom, you have to accept that you are going to make mistakes - and that's okay. The key to being a good mom is not to lose yourself in the process. Pursue your passion while raising a family and that will not only make you happier, but turn you into a great mom in the process.
From there, we were also interviewed by Traveling Mom founder, Kim Orlando who was on hand with Sony to showcase their new web cams and ask all of us how much we rely on technology when we're traveling. Case in point...I'm writing this article while I'm flying on Virgin America and if the internet were working, I'd be blogging about it right about now.
Traveling Mom also supplied us with a fabulous make-up artist from Beauty Strokes who gave us the star treatment and touched us up in time for the show. And then the doors opened and the crowd starting filing in.
I have to say, the biggest part about events that always gets me nervous is whether or not anyone will show up. I'm always pretty confident that I can deliver the goods - great content, a fun evening, socializing and good food. The question is, will moms take time out of their busy schedules to come out for an evening of entertainment. I'm happy to report, they did! The place was packed and what made me even more excited by the turnout was that we were donating a portion of the ticket sales to the Gal to Gal Foundation, which assists patients and families battling stage IV breast cancer.
Before we knew it, it was time to start the show. I hopped up on stage and started to launch into the story behind the evening. I kind of feel like over the past few years, I've taken the Kevin Costner approach to building my own field of dreams. Build it and they will come. And my dream of bringing writers together for an evening of laughs and inspiration was about to begin.
I introduced Brett Larson and the instant he took to the stage, he had the audience in stitches. You could tell he was having a great time and he was so comfortable with us. Funny, that our anchor for the night was a man but what I've come to realize is that as much as we get caught up in the whole mom humor moment, it's nice to breathe a little testosterone into the air to mix things up a bit.
The performers for the evening included Jen Singer, author of the new book Stop Second Guessing Yourself, blogger and freelance writer Melissa Chapman, Tracy Beckerman, syndicated humor colunist and author of Rebel Without a Minivan, mom blogger Vanessa Druckman; blogger and former TV promotion producer Nancy Friedman; CNN Executive producer and blogger Eden Pontz; actress and blogger Wendy Stetson and actress Katie Firth; blogger and freelance magazine writer Jeanne Muchnick; blogger and author Liz Gumbinner and Abby Peccoriello, author of Crafty Mama and editor in chief of Nickelodeon's Parents Connect.
The evening literally went by in a flash and was peppered with lots of laughter from our audience of moms, dads, husbands, friends and fellow mom bloggers. And the best part about our night in the spotlight was that when it was all over, people came up to me asking when we'd be performing again. With our debut a huge success, it looks like there will be many more Open Mom Nights coming soon. We look forward to working with CityDusk again on creating these laugh out loud events for today's busy parents.

A Can't Miss Event for Parents, Teens & Tweens
If you're a parent of a tween or teen, then you won't want to miss our next Moms Night Out event at the White Plains Library on Tuesday, March 24 as we tackle important issues facing adolescents today including cyberbullying, peer pressure and self esteem. Appetizers will be provided by Dinner in Hand. The event will take place from 7-9 pm at the White Plains Library, located at 100 Martine Avenue.
Guests panelists include:
NICOLE SHEINDLIN
From the Journal News...
When Nicole Sheindlin was growing up, dinnertable conversation at her house revolved around fairness and public policy, rather than childhood squabbles and petty grievances. The daughter of two judges--Judge Jerry (a former New York Supreme Court justice) and the famous Judge Judy--this Larchmont resident and legal-aid attorney says she grew up "with law in her blood." A year ago, Sheindlin, a petite mom of three, who for years has worked in the Bronx helping families in crisis, launched what ultimately turned out to be another full-time job: the Her Honor Mentoring Program. (In fact, she recently left her job to take over management of the program, full-time, thanks to a private grant.)
She and Judy (her stepmother), created the 25-week program, to help at-risk girls at Mamaroneck High School. The goal was to pair these juniors and seniors (the first in their families to go to college) with dynamic women mentors in the community, to show them that having a career you are passionate about leads to confidence and independence. Now in its second year, Her Honor has now expanded into another school district welcoming Mount Vernon High School students to Her Honor for the 2008-2009 school year. With their new expansion, Her Honor has more than doubled the amount of mentoring teams in just twelve months.

MARI MANCUSI
When it comes to writing, award-winning author Marianne Mancusi doesn't like to play by the rules. A multiple Emmy award winning television producer, she sold 11 novels to three publishers (Dorchester, Berkley, Dutton Children's) in less than three years. While best known for her time travel romantic comedies, Marianne also writes a vampire romance series and other books for teens.
Her latest book, Gamer Girl was released by Dutton in November 2008 and is currently part of Scholastic's book fair. Gamer Girl was also selected as an American Library Association Quick Pick for reluctant readers.
Mari has worked in television stations around the country, including Orlando, San Diego, and Boston. A graduate of Boston University's College of Communications, she currently produces for a nationally syndicated lifestyle show. She currently lives in Jersey City. To find out more about Mari, click here.
JEANNE MUCHNICK
Jeanne Muchnick is a multi-tasking mama who has been writing about her two girls ever since they were born. She's the former Editor of Baby Magazine and former InTown Senior Editor whose parenting stories have also appeared in a variety of national consumer magazines including Woman's Day, Healthy Kids, Parents, Parenting, Pregnancy, FamilyFun and more. She lives in Larchmont, NY with her two teenage girls: Corey and Sydney, her husband, Mark and her flat-coated retriever, Chip.
