Five Items That Should be on Your Registry

Now that Summer baby shower season is under way, for those of you just starting to plan a registry or help a friend, here are the items I definitely recommend adding to the list. These were the most comfortable, durable products that made life easier as a new mom:

1) Pottery Barn Head Support by Boppy

This is special because of the velour material that make it extra soft. This helps with flat head in the crib or swing and also to cradle the head in the stroller or car seat. You can remove the extra cushion and use it when they get older to prop them forward in a seat.

2) Moonlight Slumber Starlight Support Supreme Mattress

This mattress is PVC, phthalate and lead free, hypoallergenic, antimicrobially treated, waterproof and open flame resistant. There are two foam sides - the firm side for infant SIDS prevention and the memory foam side for toddler comfort, designed to accomodate joint and spine growth. I wish they made this for adults! Schneider's baby furniture in New York and Amazon both carry these.

3) Philips IQ Sterilizer

I used this for over a year, twice a day, and not once did it fail me. It fits up to 6 9oz. bottles plus accessories and small toys, and it stays sterile for up to 24 hrs. If you have a light sleeper and are trying to keep the noise down during baby's nap in a smaller space, I'd go with this one instead of opening and closing the microwave door with a steamer model.

4) Patemm Pad

Take the rectangular changing pad that comes with your diaper bag and replace it with this round one. Baby cannot squirm off it, diapers and wipes can be tucked into the sides, it comes in a range of patterns, and it folds up to a square to fit in your bag. The laminated cotton, now 100% organic and PVC free, wipes off in a cinch and can be thrown into the wash. Buy more than one for you and a gift, since shipping is costly from patemm.com. Amazon offers a few for less price.

5) Summer Infant Fold and Store Sling

Baby baths have so many gadgets these days, from temperature indicators to showerheads. The real key is this sling - which may come with some baths. This holds baby in a reclined position and cradles him. It's all mesh, so it dries quickly to avoid mold issues, and it can be folded flat. It's inexpensive, so you can buy a few for when you travel. Once baby's old enough to kick, though, he will start sliding down the sling.

The Patemm Pad is definitely one of my parenting "must haves". It has lasted for me through 2 kids!
