Meet Mom of Reinvention, Laura Wellington
Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom?
Laura: I worked as a preschool teacher and then launched two financial IT companies with my husband.
Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life?
Laura: I decided to re-invent my life immediately following the death of my husband from cancer.
Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have?
Laura: I have four children from my first marriage. I also have a stepson and a baby on the way. The deep love for my children and my commitment to ensuring that they moved through the death of their father towards successful, happy futures was one of the most prevalent reasons I launched The Wumblers. My children became very involved in the creation of the series and brand on every level. It brought us together as a family on a highly personal level and then, together, we gave it to the world of children, hoping it could bring the same comfort and joy to them that it had brought to us.
Role Mommy: What's your favorite "Time Out" tip for moms (taking time for yourself)
Laura: Find a creative hobby and don't feel guilty taking time out to do it. Creativity brings energy, happiness, and peace to one's soul. So in taking care of yourself in this regard, you are caring for all those you love in the most positive ways and setting a good example for your kids when they, too, grow up to be parents. I love to cook, bake, and eat! I do all three regularly (especially chocolate)!
Role Mommy: What does your website offer moms or kids? www.wumblers.com offers kids a safe and fun place to play where moms don't have to worry about unhealthy influences. While children enjoy painting, watermelon recipes, and matching games, moms have the opportunity to spend time doing whatever they need to do without worrying what their kids are doing on our site. There is a welcome parents portion of the site where they can learn about the company, myself and my team along with the wonderful press and awards we have been so graciously been honored with.
After our website went live for one week we were given the Kidzui family friendly website recognition for top family friendly website. My company also maintains the philosophy of never selling merchandise on www.wumblers.com. This particular site is an information/play site only. If a mom wants to buy Wumbler merchandise, they will have to go to www.wumblerpatch.com. I do not believe in the exploitation of the innocence of children or moms wallet in this or any other regard so we keep these sites separate.
Role Mommy: What do you hope for your own kids?
Laura: My hope is that they all grow up to be happy and responsible adults who reach for their dreams while ensuring that their actions in doing so and thereafter always consider their fellow man and impact positively upon the world.
Role Mommy: Who is your Role Mommy?
Laura: That's an easy one, my late husband's mother, Norma Wellington. She is the strongest, most extraordinary woman and mom I have ever met. She has taught me more about life, mothering, love, and family than any other woman I know. I can't speak enough about her. She is a role model extrordinaire!

Audrey McClelland: Living Her Dream
Since we're all about celebrating incredible moms doing what they love, I'd like to showcase one of my favorite mom vlogging friends, Audrey McClelland, the co-founder of Mom Generations . I met Audrey more than a year ago and the moment we were introduced, we instantly hit it off. Audrey is a mom of four, an Ivy League graduate and a fashion guru - having worked for Donna Karan before her children her born. While she left her career behind to become a full time mom, she decided last year to launch a video blog featuring 365 days of fashion advice. Little did she know that her YouTube videos would catch on like wildfire and catapult her into instant stardom.
Today, Audrey is the Beauty and Style co-editor for Lifetime Moms and most recently, she got the chance to work the red carpet at the People's Choice Awards along with Project Runway's Tim Gunn! How Will You Be Remembered?
While I usually write about lighthearted topics, I've decided to tackle something a bit heavy today. The reason is that a terrible tragedy took place on our block this week. One of the nicest neighbors we've ever had the pleasure of knowing was killed in a car accident.
Although Murray was 83 years old, you never would have guessed it. He had the energy of someone 30 years his junior and was always so friendly, thoughtful and genuinely concerned about our well being. Yesterday, we attended his memorial service and what we discovered was that while Murray may no longer be with us, he touched countless individuals in his lifetime.
Murray was a devoted husband who lost his wife more than a decade ago. But over the last five years, his daughter in law introduced him to a lovely woman who became his constant companion. She was one of the first to speak about how lucky she was to have met Murray and thanked him for being such an important part of her life and for being by her side while she underwent chemotherapy. His daughter and two sons shared heartfelt stories about their dad who clearly was a role model to all of them. His heartbroken granddaughter told how her life will never be the same without her "Papa."
Murray's 22 year old grandson was incredibly eloquent when he expressed how his grandfather was one of the brightest stars in their lives and while he disappeared in a flash, his impact--much like a shooting star--will have a lasting effect on future generations. His co-workers talked about his devotion to his career and to the workers he inspired as one of the most well-respected engineers in the construction industry. A childhood friend of his sons shared how much he admired and respected "Mr. Fleisch" and reminisced about how he practically grew up at his home. But most touching of all was his friend of 71 years who, while choking back tears, told how Murray was the big brother he never had, how he sent him supportive letters while he served in the Korean War, was always there for him during some of the most difficult times in his life and how he looked forward to dining with him every Wednesday. In fact, the day he died, his friend was planning to visit Murray at his home so they could catch up on the week's events.
As tears were streaming down my face, I reflected upon the legacy Murray has left behind. He was a loving husband, incredible father, doting grandfather, a leader in his industry, a consummate friend, devoted to his faith and a wonderful neighbor. And that's how he will be remembered. Murray was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
So now here's your turn. How do you think people will remember you? Are you racing through each day too busy to enjoy your family, your friends and life in general? Perhaps this Memorial Day Weekend it's time to take stock in what's most important. I certainly learned an incredible life lesson as a result of this tragedy and know that at the end of the day, it's about touching lives, inspiring others and being the kindest person you can be.
Rest in peace Murray. You will be sorely missed.

Mom of Reinvention: Marianna Olszewski
It's a new year, it's a new decade. It's time for you to stop thinking about what you want in your life and actually make it happen. As women and as moms, we are always busy, always tending to the needs of our kids, our husbands, our partners, our households, our families, our friends, our jobs. But what do you really want out of life and how can you be empowered to live the life of your dreams?
Wall Street money expert, life coach, mother and author, Marianna Olszewski, shares her secrets of success in her new book, Live it! Love it! Earn it!, in which she teaches women to be empowered - to live the life you want, to get control of your finances, to let go of stress, start your business, reach your goals and enjoy richer, happier lives.
Congrats on your new book, can you tell us about it?
Marianna: I
grew up strapped for cash which motivated me to strive for financial
abundance, independence and happiness and I'm happy to say that I
exceeded all my goals by age 30. In my book, I wanted to share
everything I've learned about managing money and following your dreams.
I wanted to empower women to focus on what they really want, how to get
out of their comfort zones and act.
Tell us some nuggets we will find in the book?
Marianna: I offer nine strategies that
help empower women in the book, everything from starting your own
business, to finding ways to say yes to yourself and reversing your
worries. I also included true stories from women overcoming challenges:
looking for a first job, climbing the corporate ladder, getting out of
debt, changing careers in midstream, starting a small business and
going solo after a divorce.
You have some very successful women who shared their stories as well, tell us about them?
Marianna: The book includes insights from successful and fulfilled women like designer Diane von Furstenberg, Jimmy Choo shoe mogul Tamara Mellon, Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and more. All these stories are to help empower women.
What is your advice to other women, other moms, who want to start a business or pursue their dreams?
Marianna: You
can definitely do it! I promise. My advice is to be very clear about
what it is that you want to pursue or exactly what kind of business you
would like to start. Be organized. A lot of our time is spent with our
kids, which is such a joy, so the time we have on our own needs to be
very organized and used efficiently. Say "no" to invitations or
activities you don't necessarily enjoy or want to do so you have the
time to say "yes" to yourself and your dreams!
How do you balance being an entrepreneur, author, life coach, savvy woman and mom?
Marianna: Being
very organized is the secret. Each night before I go to bed I list all
of the things I need to do the next day. My days are very full but very
balanced! It all works!
What is the most important piece of advice you can give to other women, other moms?
Marianna: Live
in the moment! Enjoy every minute with your kids and your family but
also enjoy the time you spend working on your business or pursuing your
dream career.
What is your favorite part of being a mother?
Marianna: Spending fun family time with my little 1 ½ year
old son, William, and my husband. I love the beach, especially being
with my son, building sand castles, splashing in the water and walking
in the ocean with his little hand in mine. Being with my little son
when he first started to walk and when he first said "mama". When he
hums twinkle twinkle, his favorite song, and tries to dance to music. When he first discovered the moon and the stars. All of these are very special moments, I will always remember.
What is the craziest part of your day?
Marianna: Usually
the mornings when I'm trying to get William ready for music class and
jugging emails, phone calls and other work related things that need to
be done.

We're about to kick off a new column in 2010 where we will be showcasing one Role Mommy each month who has managed to pursue her passion while raising a family. The mom can come from anywhere - she can be a celebrity, a business mogul, author, blogger, parenting expert, teacher, politician or philanthropist. But now that 2009 has passed us by, we're going to share our picks for Role Mommies of the Year...one mom at a time! So let's start with the winner!
Michelle Obama - hands down, there is no competition. After she delivered an impassioned speech at the democratic national convention (see video below), Michelle had me hooked with the story of her life.
These days, I love catching glimpses of Michelle in her latest outfit and those toned arms (check out Harper's Bazaar photo above) and also that the first daughters are tagging along as she travels the world. That's what being a mom is all about - having your children experience amazing things in life while you're in the driver's seat guiding them every step of the way.

Meet Mom of Reinvention, Elina Furman
Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom?
Elina: Before becoming a mom, I was working as an author/web consultant/travel writer. As you can imagine, I had a great time travelling the world and had a lot of built in variety in my life that I thrived on. I wrote for many different magazines and traveled to amazing places. My beat was luxury travel, so I visited incredible hotels all over Italy, France, the Caribbean and Mexico and really got used to being on the go.
I am also the author of over 20 books. In fact, right before having my son Julian (19 months old now), I had written a book called "Kiss and Run: The Single Girl's Guide to Overcoming Her Fear of Commitment" so I was very nervous about how marriage and having children would impact my lifestyle. Looking back, I'm glad I waited until my 30s for marriage/baby since I really appreciated travelling and got a lot out of my system by savoring my independence and really thinking seriously about what commitment means to me.
Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life?
Elina: I guess it all happened organically after the completion of my book. I got married to my husband and got pregnant soon after. During that time, I was able to maintain my role as an editor-in-chief of a lifestyle magazine by working at home, but it was getting harder and harder to work after Julian was born. I put out several issues of the magazine through the first 6 colicky months of his life, but soon found myself running on empty and had to leave my position. I had always worked all of my life, so it was very hard to think about not having a creative outlet, not writing and always being at home. The first year of my son's life was very hard emotionally and psychologically, but I realize now I was gradually shifting into a new identity as a mother and was about to embark on a new, exciting and very challenging path as an entrepreneur.
Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have?
Elina: My son Julian is my only child and has influenced me a great deal. During the time I wasn't working and taking care of him, I spent a significant portion of my time online looking for baby products, toys and all kids of gear for him and was finding myself very overwhelmed by the amount of information. With the recession looming, money was an issue and I wanted to make sure that what I bought would last a long time or could be repurposed in some way. I literally spent about 3 hours deciding which sleep sack to purchase. So after all the research, I realized I really had a unique skill picking out unique and value-minded products. And that's when I came up with the idea for my business. So you can say my son is the entire inspiration behind it.
Role Mommy: What's your favorite "Time Out" tip for moms (taking time for yourself)
Elina: I don't have childcare outside my mom who is very involved and is an amazing help to me while I run my business, but I really try to find some "me" time whenever I can. Unfortunately, "me time" has become "grow the business" time and I find myself split between wanting to spend time with my son and growing anxious when I can't work on the business. Sometimes it feels like I am only 50 percent anywhere and it's very hard since you feel like you're not functioning well in any area of life because of all the demands.
Recently, I am trying something new. Instead of being at home while my mom watches my son and not getting much done since he always finds me even when I hide in the basement to work, I have been popping out to the coffee shop to get work done and something even more radical is taking a day where I stay over at my mom's place in the city just to plow through work while my mom stays at my place at my home in Westchester. I know most moms don't have this opportunity and I sometimes feel guilty to be away for a night, but I'm hoping that this uninterrupted alone time will give me the focus to stay on track and be a better mom and an entrepreneur. Other than that, my only indulgences are a warm bath after he falls asleep and reality TV shows that I DVR'd the night before.
Role Mommy: What does your website offer moms or kids?
Elina: My website, Mamaista.com, offers moms a clutter-free and stylish space to receive information without getting overwhelmed. I co-founded the business with my sister, Leah Furman, and we offer a short daily email with one amazing product that is usually innovative, stylish and make mom's life easier in some way. I used my experience as the former editorial director of sites like WomansDay.com and Seventeen.com and all my years launching websites to create a stylish, breezy and chaos-free web space for moms.
Since we are not a blog or a traditional website, we stand apart since we deliver funny, pithy and important product information straight to mom's inboxes Monday through Friday. All of our subscribers are extremely loyal and take our product recommendations very seriously. Our open rate and click through rate is amazing, since moms have all chosen to be on the list and actually look forward to getting their daily Mamaista newsletter. We have gotten incredible responses for our product choices and our writing, and it is this dedication to delivering the best writing and products that I hope sets us apart.
Role Mommy: What do you hope for your own kids?
Elina: I hope my son learns to follow his own path in life, and only conforms to a moderate degree to be able to actualize his unique goals. I hope he is a kind person who understands how to balance duty to himself and others without falling into the trap of extreme self-sacrifice, since I strongly believe one has to be happy and fulfilled before they could truly help others. I hope he has curiosity and a strong constitution and understands that hard work breeds its own luck and that he has plenty of the latter in his life. I hope what all Moms hope -- that he is safe, healthy and happy.
Role Mommy: Who is your Role Mommy?
Elina: My role mommies are vast. A combination of my own Mom, my grandmother and all the moms I see today working so hard to launch their own businesses and still raise a family. All the moms I admire have had to balance hard work outside or inside the home with raising children. I thought I knew what hard work was, but I think it took having a child to really understand its true meaning.

Meet Mom of Reinvention: Dre Towey
Dre Towey is a rock-n-roll mother of three who is a talented singer and produces hip children's music. As a former elementary school teacher and art educator, Dre's experiences with her children resonate through her music. And she's a part of the talented kids' band, Sugar on Top.
Additionally, Dre raises money from her performances to support an organization she is very passionate about, the Haiti Lumiere de Demain Inc, an organization operating to promote literacy and educational opportunities among children of Haiti. We caught up with this Mom of Reinvention and here's what she had to say.
Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom?
Dre: I was a coach and an educator. I coached soccer and lacrosse and taught elementary school in NYC while attending graduate classes for art education at Bank Street/Parsons School of Design.
Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life?
Dre: It wasn't so much reinvention as evolution. One step led to another. I was always writing and illustrating while teaching, my writing became more lyrical as my children were born. I never said, "I can't do this"... instead I thought, this feels good and I want to try it. I've always said, "I am a late bloomer" but now I think, doors open all the time and it is up to us to either walk through or walk away. How else can you grow?
Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have?
Dre: Absolutely. When I taught I learned the best teaching tool was listening. Children have a very unique and fresh perspective on all kinds of things. Things that we may have forgotten or may not think to talk about as adults. Now I have three children-- ages 10, 8 and 5 (girl, boy,girl). They constantly inspire me through their observations, things they say and do. For instance, my daughter dressed up in toilet paper the other night and I thought about writing a song called, "Toilet Paper Runway Queen."
Role Mommy: What's your favorite "Time Out" tip for moms (taking time for yourself)
Dre: I love to run and "let the birds fly". In other words, let all my crazy thoughts flutter around me as I pound the pavement. I also play soccer which is great for my mind, spirit and body. But the best time out for me is when I can laugh with a friend. Oh! and I love to dance. If I can dance in a crowd and lose myself-- this is immense. Then I can go back to being a mom the next day. Some people don't feel comfortable being alone with their thoughts or feel selfish taking a "time out". Some may find volunteering at a school or at a non-profit is incredibly soulful and an incredible escape from your own daily grind.
Role Mommy: What does your website offer moms or kids?
Dre: I am trying to update my website more often with links and blogs. But the truth of it is, right now my website offers information about my music and concert updates. When I am feeling the gumption, I update my blog.
Role Mommy: What do you hope for your own kids?
Dre: I want my children to grow up happy and confident. I want them to share their gifts with others. We all contribute in our own way-- through art, laughter, leadership, etc. I want them to know we all have a role in this world and to chose theirs and use it well.
Role Mommy: Who is your Role Mommy?
Dre: My mommy. I have referred to her as "the perpetual cheerleader." She always cheered me on and I hope that I can do the same for my children.

Meet Mom of Reinvention, Bradi Nathan
Role Mommy: What did you do before you became a mom?
Bradi Nathan: Life before motherhood you ask? Well, I did have an important job as the Advertising Manager at Marie Claire magazine in NYC. Prior to that I was the Beauty Advertising Director at Town & Country magazine. Sounds fancy, I know.
Role Mommy: When did you decide to reinvent your life?
Bradi: Prior to having children I defined myself by what I did for a living. That's who I was to my very core. I had my son in the year 2000. It was at this time that I decided to stay home to reinvent myself, and my life.
Role Mommy: How have your children influenced your career path? How many do you have?
Bradi: Having 2 children allowed me to realize exactly what I wanted out of life. Working in a corporate environment, and in an industry that doesn't sleep, prohibits you from taking the time to explore much else. It was on maternity leave that I realized exactly how much I enjoy writing. I wrote to clear my head and to jot down thoughts- it's very therapeutic in nature. Those thoughts led me to where I am today because I turned them into a reality. My reality is MyWorkButterfly.com- a social networking site I co-founded in January of this year for working and return-to-work moms.
Role Mommy: What's your favorite "Time Out" tip for moms (taking time for yourself)
Bradi: I know you might think I'm sick in the head but when I work, I consider that to be taking time for myself. As a mompreneur I am so passionate about my business and the effect MyWorkButterfly.com is having on so many moms across the globe. A quick manicure/pedicure doesn't compare.

Live with Purpose Tweet Up with Lee Woodruff
I was honored to be a guest panelist at the BlogHer '09 Pepsico Roundtable event hosted by Jill Beraud, the passionate and dynamic marketing CMO for Pepsico, and my favorite Role Mommy, best selling author and journalist Lee Woodruff, who moderated the discussion.
Lee is truly a role model for purposeful living - having created the Bob and Lee Woodruff Foundation and Remind.org along with her husband, former news anchor Bob Woodruff who suffered traumatic brain injuries while covering the Iraqi war for ABC news. Following his miraculous recovery, which the couple recount in the New York Times bestseller, In an Instant: A Family's Journey of Love and Healing
Lee moderated a panel devoted to purposeful living with a diverse group of female bloggers at the 2009 BlogHer convention. The goal for the "Purposeful Life Tweet-up" was to create an annual event at BlogHer that encourages women to explore what's important to them and what gives their lives meaning. The results will be archived in a digital index and examined to explore how women's attitudes and perceptions about purpose in their lives changes over time.
I couldn't believe how quickly the hour passed and yet, within those 60 minutes, we bonded over topics that were of great importance to us such as advocacy, our careers, giving a voice to a cause through our writing, work/life balance and of course, our families. While we laughed quite a bit during the conversation, there there even intense moments in the conversation that moved all of us to tears.
Throughout the chat, Lee read tweets that were submitted from around the world - and even Sarah at Genesis Moments joined in with a tweet from Philadelphia. And, my partner in crime, Traveling Mom's Kim Orlando sent in the tweet "You can travel with a purpose and make an impact." A special thanks to Kim for helping me discover my purpose - the ability to touch others through my writing. I laughed, I cried and it was one of the most fulfilling hours of my life.
